Alya Segal is an art historian, independent curator, and researcher. She is the co-curator of the Ukrainian section of the Secondary Archive and the founder and curator of the apartment gallery KRUCHI a situational home-based exhibition space and a flexible curatorial platform for intimate, research-driven exhibition and gatherings, often working with questions of context, precarious infrastructure, and forms of care and community under wartime conditions.
In her practice, Alya Segal explores contemporary Ukrainian art and the representation of women within it. The foundation of her work lies in studying the impact of war on culture and society in the context of russia's military invasion of Ukraine.
During her residency at PART, Alya plans to focus on research and writing while engaging with Vienna’s contemporary art scene. Alya is particularly interested in visiting local studios, getting acquainted with institutions and practitioners, and understanding the local context through meetings and public conversations. The residency will also provide a focused working environment to develop her ongoing curatorial projects and academic research.
