Built in 1873 as exhibition buildings for the Vienna World Exhibition in the historicist Ringstrasse style, the “Pavillons des Amateurs” were dedicated to art then as they are today. By the end of the nineteenth century, the two remaining pavilions on the former exhibition grounds were already being used by artists as a place to work. Renowned artists such as Tina Blau, Hans Hollein, Alfred Hrdlicka, Oswald Oberhuber, Josef Pillhofer, Joannis and Annemarie Avramidis, Roland Göschl, Ruth Schnell and many others have made the spacious studios an internationally important centre of sculptural production over the decades. This glorious tradition continues today in the centre of Vienna's largest park, the Vienna Prater. Over the years, the sculptors have repeatedly campaigned for the preservation of the area.
PART regularly organizes public events at the BAR DES AMATEURS and THE HALL, which feature a diverse and sometimes large audience in some of the site’s shared spaces, including the garden. Some of these events involve residents in their programme, while others do not. In addition, participants who are invited to take part in these events may be invited to stay for short periods at PART. Residents are informed in advance of these events. PART guarantees a welcoming and safe environment for all its guests.
PART curates a wide range of cultural and inclusive events, including open studios, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and other opportunities for intercultural exchange. PART also organizes meetings with special guests, visits to archives, museums and cultural organizations that are relevant to the work of the residency participants and are individually adapted to their working methods and themes. Vienna has a lively and experimental art scene. PART connects residency participants to the city's cultural scene and provides information about exhibitions, lectures, performances and other events. Wherever possible, PART brings participants into contact with relevant organisations in Vienna and introduces the residency community to creative people from the city, including curators, writers, the press, artists and others from diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds - also through partnerships established on a project-by-project basis. We will share institutional resources and expertise, opportunities for public engagement, and a scaffold for interaction and exchange between other residents and communities within and outside the contemporary arts.
The duration and exact dates are flexible and can be customized within certain limits depending on the participant, project and availability. The period ranges from one to four months.
Yes. However, keep in mind that when PART attributes a residency for a specific project, the offer remains the same: collective applicants should take into consideration that their members will share facilities. The grant is not adapted for artists’ collectives according to the number of members in the group. A studio apartment can comfortably accommodate two adults or a small family. For groups of three or more adults, we advise applicants to organize themselves according to their needs and the limitations of the accommodation. Duos and collectives should send one application form and a joint portfolio.
Arrival time must be arranged with PART team. Check-in and check-out are made during working days and hours, and must be arranged with the PART team. Check-in after 5 pm, check-out after 12 pm, during weekends or holidays cannot be accommodated. Upon arrival, residents will receive an email with arrival information and instructions.
