In cooperation with Secession
May 2026
Beaux Mendes begins by going out into the field to paint from observation. Repeated trips to sites invoke rituals of passage and pilgrimage. Their surfaces unfold in a continuum of unusual ingredients: animal hide, wood, marble dust, and distemper. Animated by enigmatic layers of abstraction and apparitional figures, appearances arrive as much as they withdraw in Mendes' work, opening up spaces of irresolution.
During the residency at PART, Beaux Mendes will focus on preparing for their upcoming exhibition at the Secession, scheduled to open this December. In parallel, they will begin developing compositional studies for a large-scale, multi-figure distemper painting which they intend to complete upon returning to Los Angeles, where they live and work.
